Young Cheetah At Sunset In The Kalahari – Story Behind The Photograph

One evening in the Kalahari I followed a young cheetah as the sun dropped toward the horizon. The air cooled, the colours deepened and the sky turned a deep orange and red. Springbok grazed not too far away, scattered across the open plain.

The youngster slipped into a band of low shrubs and froze, using every bit of cover he could find. He was still learning, not yet as smooth and invisible as an adult, but already practising the art of the stalk. With the sun sinking behind him, his body almost disappeared into the vegetation while his head stayed just visible above the leaves.

In this frame the young cheetah at sunset in the Kalahari sits half‑hidden in the foreground, mouth slightly open, eyes focused on the distant springbok. The background melts into soft grasses and a glowing band of sky, where the sun becomes a bright disc on the horizon.

Warm Light, Quiet Tension

What I love in this image is the combination of warmth and tension. The scene looks peaceful and almost romantic, yet the cheetah’s posture tells another story. He is alert, weighing his chances, feeling the pull between opportunity and inexperience. The wide space around him shows how exposed hunts can be on these open pans.

For me, this photograph captures the moment when day turns to night and a young predator begins to test himself against the Kalahari. It is both beautiful and uncertain, like the first steps into adulthood.
