Story Behind The Photograph – Young Cheetah Hissing On A Dirt Track

This young cheetah hissing on a dirt track is the cheeky brother from your Kalahari birthday sighting. After following his family along the road, he decided to claim the centre of the track and walk directly toward us.

I stayed low and completely still at the edge of the road. As he came closer, he slowed, stared and then gave this full, dramatic hiss. It was more bravado than threat – a young predator testing how powerful he could be. The sound, the raised lips and the bright eyes made the moment unforgettable.

In this frame the young cheetah hissing on a dirt track fills the vertical composition. His front paw reaches forward, claws just visible on the mud, while the soft green background and pale track lead the eye straight to his face.

Small Body, Big Attitude

What I love here is how much attitude fits into such a small body. He is still clearly a cub, with soft fur and a slight mane, yet he already practises the fierce display of an adult cheetah. The low angle pulls the viewer into his path, so it feels as if he is hissing directly at you.
