Story Behind The Photograph – Young Cheetah In Disbelief

This young cheetah in disbelief is once again the cheeky brother from the Kalahari birthday sighting. We had found a cheetah mother with her two youngsters, and I had settled low in the grass to meet them at eye level.

As he came closer, his mood shifted between curiosity, play and pure surprise. At this moment he paused, head slightly tilted, mouth just open, eyes fixed on me as if asking, “What exactly are you?” It is a look every wildlife photographer recognises – that instant when an animal tries to solve the puzzle of your presence.

In this frame the young cheetah in disbelief fills the right side of the image. Soft green grass blurs in the foreground, while the pale background keeps all attention on his expression. His eyes are wide and bright, full of focus and uncertainty at the same time.

Hyperfocused Curiosity

What I love here is the mix of intensity and humour. He is completely locked onto the moment, yet his expression makes you smile. The low perspective and shallow depth of field draw you straight into his gaze, so you feel like the one he is studying.
