Story Behind The Photograph – Young Cheetah In Open Grassland

This young cheetah in open grassland is part of the same Kalahari birthday encounter. We had found a cheetah mother with two subadult youngsters. While they explored and watched the plains, the light stayed gentle and the landscape felt vast and quiet.

For this image I stepped back and chose a wider angle. Instead of filling the frame with the cheetah, I wanted to show how small and delicate she looks inside the endless Kalahari. She stands in a sea of soft grass with the horizon stretching far behind her, a perfect symbol of space and freedom.

In this frame the young cheetah in open grassland looks straight toward the camera. Her body rises cleanly from the foreground, while layers of grass fade into the distance. The sky is pale and calm, with just enough colour to balance the greens and golds below.

Space To Breathe

What I love about this photograph is the sense of space. There is room to breathe, to think and to imagine. The cheetah holds the centre of the frame, but the open grassland around her tells as much of the story as she does. It shows the scale of her world and the quiet strength it takes to survive there.
