Story Behind The Photograph – Young Cheetah Standing In The Grass

I met this young cheetah standing in the grass on my birthday. We had found a cheetah mother with two subadult youngsters in the Kalahari, Botswana. The mother was resting low in the grass, very relaxed. However, the youngsters were full of curiosity.

To get closer to their eye level, I sat down in the mud beside the vehicle. From there the scene felt even more intimate. The young cheetahs kept looking at me, ears forward, eyes bright. Slowly they came closer and closer, always pausing to study the strange shape on the ground.

In this frame one young cheetah standing in the grass lifts his head and looks directly at the camera. The pale green of the Kalahari plains and the soft, blurred horizon make him stand out clearly. For me it holds all the emotion of that morning: calm, curiosity and the quiet joy of sharing my birthday with wild cheetahs. It remains one of my best birthdays ever.

What I love here is the mix of innocence and potential. The young cheetah already has the long legs and slim body of a future sprinter. Yet his expression still feels gentle and open. Because the background is so soft and simple, the viewer’s eye goes straight to his face and then down the elegant line of his body.
