Story Behind The Photograph – Soft Tones And A Three‑Legged Illusion

I made this image on an open stretch of ground near the Mana Pools forest. The air was still and slightly dusty, and the trees behind the elephant melted into gentle layers of blue and mauve. As I watched, a young bull stepped forward and paused, curious but calm.

He planted his feet, lifted his head and looked straight ahead. Because one front leg lined up neatly with his trunk, the camera created a small illusion: at first glance, he seems to have three legs in a row. This tiny quirk adds a touch of humour to the portrait, while the rest of the scene remains peaceful and understated. The young elephant in blue haze simply stands and breathes in the quiet valley.
