Story Behind The Photograph – Young Leopard In The Rain

This young leopard in the rain was photographed in Chobe, Botswana. We first found her high in a tree, feeding on a baboon while heavy clouds built above the river. Before long, the rain started, softly at first and then in hard, driving sheets.

As the storm grew stronger, she decided to leave the tree. She climbed down with care and slipped into a tangle of bushes to find shelter from the rain. Other vehicles chose to leave the sighting. However, we stayed in the open car, getting drenched but unwilling to miss what might happen next.

In this frame the young leopard in the rain stands just under the leaves. A final band of evening light breaks through and catches her face and chest. Everything else sinks into deep shadow: the background, the branches and the wet fur along her side. Her eyes stay fixed on something in the distance, calm and alert at the same time.

Patience In The Storm

Photography in heavy rain can be difficult. Gear fogs up, fingers get cold and the light seems to disappear. Yet patience often brings the strongest images. Because we waited, we saw the exact moment when the clouds opened and the light returned. The young leopard in the rain became a quiet study of texture, mood and perseverance.

The hanging green leaves frame her profile and add a soft curve on the left side of the image. In contrast, the leopard’s face is all fine lines and sharp detail. Together they give the portrait a painterly feel, even though it was made in rough weather deep in the bush.
