Kalahari Morning – Lions on the Road

In the Kalahari, lions often use the sand road. It offers an easy path through thorny bush and long grass. On this morning we came across two young lions lying right on the track. They were relaxed, stretched out on the cool sand after the night’s activity.

First, we watched them drink from a small puddle in the road. Then the mood changed. They stood up and began to walk toward us with new intent. At the same time, a bank of dark clouds built behind them. Early light hit the lions and the grass beside the road, while the sky stayed heavy and blue. This contrast gave the whole scene a dramatic edge and turned it into striking african lion wall art.

Story Behind the Photograph – Storm Road

I took this photograph in the early hours, when the Kalahari was still quiet and cool. We had stopped as soon as we saw the two young lions lying on the road. Rather than move, we waited and let them decide what to do next. After they had finished drinking from the puddle, they started walking straight toward the vehicle.

I lowered my angle to stay at eye level and used a wide aperture. This kept the lead lion crisp and sharp, while the second lion and the grass behind him softened into a gentle blur. The stormy sky provided a moody backdrop without distracting from the main subject.
