This image was made at a waterhole in the Serengeti, Tanzania. The zebra were nervous, coming in to drink but repeatedly bolting away from the water. They know they are vulnerable when they have their heads down and their hooves in the mud, and a lion charge from cover can be deadly. Each time a sound or movement spooked them, they would explode out of the water and race across the plain.

The light that day was flat and not very flattering for classic wildlife portraits. Rather than give up, I decided to use it as an opportunity to experiment. I slowed my shutter speed and began panning with the herd every time they burst away from the water. Most frames were chaotic, but every now and then the rhythm of the stripes and the speed of the movement lined up.

This photograph is one of those moments: the lead zebra sharp enough to anchor the eye, the rest of the herd stretching into soft, flowing lines behind. It holds the tension of animals on edge, but also the joy of playing with technique when conditions are not ideal.
