Mana Pools Photo Safari

Walking with giants in Zimbabwe’s wildest valley

Mana Pools photo safari in Zimbabwe, 11 nights / 12 days, starting and ending in Victoria Falls. Small group (4- 6 guests) with personal photographic guidance throughout. This itinerary includes 2 nights Kanga, 5 nights Camp Mana, and 3 nights Kavinga, combining riverfront scenes, hides, and exceptional walking opportunities.

A photographic journey through Mana Pools

Join me for an immersive Mana Pools photo safari in one of Africa’s most magical wilderness areas. We begin at Victoria Falls and then fly into Mana Pools for an itinerary that combines three very different camps and perspectives: the inland escarpment and hide at Kavinga Camp, the iconic Zambezi riverfront at Camp Mana, and the intimate pan‑side experience of Kanga Expeditions.

See all other upcoming trips on my African photo safaris page.

This trip is designed for nature‑loving photographers who want time, space and expert guidance to create powerful images – and to simply enjoy being in the wild.

Mana Magic – what makes this valley so unique

People often talk about “Mana Magic”, but it is hard to understand until you stand there yourself. The Acacia albida forests create an almost mystical atmosphere. Fine dust hangs in the air, the light turns a soft blue between the trunks, and then the low sun pours warm golden light through the branches.

Across the river, the Zambezi escarpment on the Zambian side forms a deep blue backdrop. Huge mahogany and fig trees anchor the landscape and add to the sense of scale. It is no surprise that Mana Pools is a UNESCO World Heritage Site– this valley feels like another world.

More than a just a photo safari

This Mana Pools safari is not just about coming home with great photographs – it is about what happens to you while you are out there.

I moved my life to Africa because of the way the bush made me feel: completely awake, deeply calm and strangely at home. That is the feeling I want to share with you on this journey.

Photography with time and space

Of course, we work seriously on your photography. You learn to understand light, timing and animal behaviour, so your images tell the real story of what you have seen. However, the true gift of this trip is harder to describe.

A deeper experience in the wild

It is the moment you stand a few metres from a wild elephant, heart beating fast, and then realise you are not afraid. You understand its body language, you trust your guide, and you feel the ground under your feet. For a few seconds there is no distance between you and the animal. You are simply there together, breathing the same air.

At night, you fall asleep to lions calling in the distance. Then you wake up to hippos, baboons and the first light filtering through the trees. On walks, you move through the albida forests with dust in the air and feel more alive with every step. Finally, you look up at a night sky filled with stars, and everyday worries feel very small.

You can read about it and you can look at a thousand photos, but you will only really understand when you experience it yourself. On this safari my role is to guide you into that experience safely and respectfully. I help you feel comfortable on foot, explain what we see and why animals behave the way they do, and make sure you have the time and space to be fully present – not just to collect sightings.

The quiet wellness of the wild

Spending 12 days on a Mana Pools photo safari also has a gentle, surprising effect on your body and mind.

Many guests notice:

  • A deep mental reset – Your days follow sunrise and sunset instead of emails and notifications. Very soon your nervous system slows down to the rhythm of the bush.
  • A soft digital detox – Wi‑Fi is limited and optional. The screen you look at most is the horizon, not your phone.
  • Disconnect to truly reconnect – With fewer distractions, conversations become deeper and laughter comes easier. Many guests reconnect with parts of themselves they had forgotten.
  • Better, wilder sleep – Fresh air, natural light and the sounds of the night often lead to the best sleep people have had in years.
  • Nature’s own stress relief – Watching elephants at the water, listening to birds at dawn and sitting quietly by the river calm the body in a way that is hard to find at home.
  • Sun on your skin and dust on your shoes – Gentle walking, natural light and Vitamin D work quietly in the background, leaving you feeling grounded and energised.

Photography may be the reason you decide to book. The real treasure is how you feel when you go home: clearer, calmer and still carrying a little of the Mana Magic inside you.

Learning, not performing

You do not have to be an expert photographer to join this trip. You just need curiosity.

I love to teach, but I do not run “bootcamp‑style” workshops (although some might disagree after I made you lie down in the dust!). Instead, I meet you where you are:

  • If you are a beginner, I help you master the basics and give you simple, practical steps you can remember.
  • If you are more experienced, I challenge you to refine your vision, work a scene for longer and create images that feel more like you.
  • Between game drives we review your photos together, and I show you how I process my images in a way that keeps them natural and true to the moment.

Most importantly, there is no pressure to perform. On some drives you might photograph a lot. On others you may choose to put your camera down and simply watch as wild dogs trot past or elephants melt into the forest. Both choices are perfect.

Even if you are not into photography, the experience of walking with elephants, listening to lions at night and living in a wild, open camp is more than enough. Mana Pools is about being one with nature first – the photos are a beautiful bonus.

Why this Mana Pools safari is special

  • Three contrasting camps, one story
  • From the dry riverbed of the Ruckomechi at Kavinga overlooking a busy waterhole to the open floodplains of Camp Mana and the legendary armchair safari at Kanga Pan, you see Mana Pools from three unique angles – inland hills, Zambezi riverfront and remote inland pan. Kavinga’s private concession and hide are well known for close wildlife and bird photography, while Kanga overlooks the only water source for many kilometres, drawing wildlife right into camp.
  • Exceptional walking and hide photography
  • Mana Pools is famous as one of the few places in Africa where you can regularly and responsibly walk among big game. We often leave the vehicle to photograph at eye level, lie in the dust for low‑angle images, or quietly follow painted wolves on foot when conditions allow. Dedicated hides at Kavinga and Kanga bring elephants, predators and birdlife to you, often just metres away.
  • Small group, big time in the field
  • With a maximum of six guests there is space for everyone in the vehicle and on foot. We spend long, unhurried sessions with wildlife instead of racing from sighting to sighting. This slower pace lets you wait for the right light and behaviour, and it gives you time to really feel the place.
  • Expert guiding and personal photographic coaching
  • You travel with me as your professional wildlife photographer and a highly experienced Zimbabwean guide. Together we read animal behaviour, choose the best positions and keep you safe on foot. I am with you throughout the trip to help with composition, camera settings and use of light, whether you are just starting out or already an advanced photographer.
  • Post‑processing and learning between game drives
  • The experience does not end when we return to camp. Between game drives we review your pictures together, and I share my own editing workflow. You learn how to select your best images and process them in a natural way, so that the photographs you take in Mana Pools are ready to print, share or exhibit when you get back home.

Camps

Living in the wild

All three camps on this Mana Pools photo safari are open to nature. There are no fences between you and the wildlife that calls this valley home. It is not unusual for elephants to wander through camp or for you to hear lions and hyenas while you are brushing your teeth.

At night, with no light pollution, the sky is filled with stars and you feel truly secluded, looking up at trillions of lights overhead. Each camp is comfortable and welcoming, with good food and warm hospitality, but the real luxury is the feeling of being completely immersed in wild Africa.

Kavinga Safari Camp – Above the Ruckomechi

Perched on a cliff on the southern boundary of Mana Pools, Kavinga overlooks a busy waterhole and the dry Ruckomechi riverbed with the Zambezi escarpment as a backdrop. Seven raised tents have wide views straight from your verandah, and the star attraction is the water‑level hide at the pan – a dream for photographers who want eye‑level encounters with elephants, buffalo and predators

Highlights:
– Private concession with flexible activities
– Famous sunken hide at the waterhole
– Excellent walking and birding

Camp Mana – Classic Zambezi riverfront

Camp Mana is set right on the banks of the Zambezi, with views across to the Zambian escarpment and easy access to Mana’s iconic floodplains and albida forests. This is the Mana Pools you see in the classic images: elephants standing on their hind legs, wild dogs hunting across the plains, sunsets over the river and endless layers of light and dust. The camp itself is simple, authentic and perfectly placed for long days out in the field and relaxed evenings by the fire.

Highlights:
– Direct riverfront location
– Access to famous Mana walking and game‑viewing areas
– Long stay: time to work each scene and improve your images

Kanga Expeditions – The Armchair Safari

Inland from the floodplain, Kanga Expeditions overlooks Kanga Pan, the only permanent water source in a wide radius during the dry season. Wildlife comes to drink right in front of camp: elephants, lions, wild dogs, antelope and abundant birdlife. Raised canvas tents with floor‑to‑ceiling mesh bring the outside in, and the main deck, plunge pool and hide give you multiple elevated and low‑angle photographic perspectives.

Highlights:
– Incredible in‑camp game viewing and photography
– Dedicated hide under the deck
– Famous “armchair safari” atmosphere

To join this Mana Pools photo safari, please click the Book Now button on this page and fill out the booking form. I will check availability with the camps and send you a detailed quote.
Once you are ready to confirm, I ask for a 20% deposit to secure your place. As soon as I receive your deposit and you accept my Booking Terms and Conditions, your booking is confirmed and your spot is reserved.

Yes, the deposit is non-refundable. Here is why: as soon as you book, I commit to small, remote camps and charter flights on your behalf. These operators apply strict cancellation policies from the moment I reserve your space, so I am not able to refund your deposit if your plans change later.
That said, I strongly recommend arranging travel insurance as soon as your booking is confirmed. A good policy will cover trip cancellation and curtailment, including your deposit and balance, so you are protected if something unexpected happens.

The remaining 80% balance is due 8 weeks before the safari starts. If you book less than 8 weeks before departure, the full amount is payable when you confirm.
If you need to cancel after paying your deposit, the amount I can refund depends on how close we are to departure. The camps and flights have tiered cancellation policies, and I pass those terms on to you transparently. You can find the full breakdown of deposits, balance payments and cancellation timelines on my Booking Terms and Conditions page.

Yes, travel insurance is essential for any safari in a remote wilderness area. I strongly recommend arranging a policy as soon as your booking is confirmed.
Your insurance should cover:

  • Trip cancellation and curtailment, including your deposit and balance
  • Medical treatment and emergency evacuation from remote areas
  • Loss or damage to luggage and camera equipment
